Harborfest Novelis STEM Family Park Receives Grant from Shineman Foundation

OSWEGO (January 22) - Harborfest’s Novelis STEM Family Park has been awarded $5,000 by the Richard S. Shineman Foundation. This grant will allow the Novelis STEM Family Park to continue to grow its science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focus.

"The Shineman Foundation is delighted to support the Harborfest Children's Park and is excited that this year the focus will be on STEM themed activities.  Dr. Shineman was particularly passionate about science education, and our Foundation is committed to supporting STEM themed learning opportunities for our community,” said Lauren Pistell, a representative of the Shineman Foundation. Pistell added, "As a mother, I am thrilled that my children can take advantage of these free, fun and educational opportunities right in our backyard."

During Harborfest 2013 the Novelis STEM Family Park featured a variety of demos and activities that were focused on science and the arts. Novelis held science experiments for children to get involved. The MOST brought engaging science experiments which included both hands-on activities and demonstrations. The Children’s Museum of Oswego brought to the table another approach with tactile and sensory exhibits, experiential play, as well as science experiments. The Novelis STEM Family Park also featured a children’s musical, art activities, and nutrition workshops.

“We are extremely grateful for this grant from the Shineman Foundation as we continue to expand the Novelis STEM Family Park activities for Harborfest 2014,” said Chena Tucker, Harborfest Children’s Committee Chair and member of the Board of Directors. The Harborfest Children’s Committee is looking forward to featuring many similar activities this year with the help of the grant from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation.
